Peter and Brigitte Pliger are the owners of the Kuenhof winery, probably among the best producers of white wine in Italy. Their steep and stony vineyards are located in Isonzo Valley, not far from the border with Austria. The climate is continental, the vineyards are terraced, between 1,800 and 2,300 meters above sea level are exposed to the south-east. Their wines are bottled with a new screw cap. According to the producer, its white wines, develop and mature better with the screw cap over the cork stopper that causes a slow exchange with oxygen.
The characteristics of the Veltiner come from the soil texture, the terroir is very particular, and it contains schists, phyllites and quartz layers of glacial gravel. The philosophy in the vineyard is oriented to respect nature, tending to the biodynamic approach, chemical pesticides are not used, only copper and sulfur. The duty of a great wine is to be distinctive, Kuenhof’s wines show a proper character, mineral, almost electric, where you can hear the great terroir, the careful viticulture, and the brilliant vinification leaves the yeasts to ferment the wort and make extraordinary wines. The Veltliner is silky and elegant on the palate, good balance between acidity and fruity aromas, a wine intriguing and very long.
